so, while "working" i did my taxes. hey, i'm 23 and don't have any kids or investments, so it takes all of 4 minutes to do my taxes.
i have always gotten a return. always.
i fucking owe this year.
why, you ask? simple: mommy fucking dearest.
you see, she and my dad still claim me as a dependent, even though i have not lived with them in 5 years. oh, they pay my car insurance and dental insurance and used to pay part of my cell phone and medical expenses. i pay everything else.
but they still claim me so they don't owe taxes. and biddy just gets fucked in the process.
so, after i figured out the difference in getting a nice little hunk of cash (that would be put to great use, like paying living expenses) i emailed mom and asked if she still claims me. her response "yes, why?" So, I told her that her claiming me was the difference in a $276 return or owing $63. Yeah, I know, neither of those is a substantial amount of money, but think back to when you were a poor college student and you'll realize that, yeah, that really is a HUGE difference.
her response? "Me not claiming you, will probably mean us owing much more than 63.00. :)"
to which i replied: "i know. i was just really looking forward to my tax return...oh well."
to which she says: "If I don't claim you, I can't use your medical expenses, dental insurance premiums or dental expenses as a deduction. I could pay you the $276.00 and you could pay the expenses. :)"
now, i didn't quite follow what she was saying, though i had an inkling. so, i so eloquently responded "huh?"
her response? "It would be cheaper for me to pay only the $276.00 and you to pay all the medical expenses??? ::)"
in other words "you're just fucked on this one." And what's with the stupid smiley faces? like smiling while you're telling me that you don't give a flying rat's ass about my money situation makes it all ok?! what the fuck!? It's bad enough you're so damn callous about the pain i'm in from my back. and now you're telling me that i'm not getting my tax return because it benefits you?
i'm so not happy. or dopey. or smiley. or doc. or bashful. or sleepy. ok, maybe i'm a little sleepy, but mostly, i'm GRUMPY!

You're lucky she pays the car ins., dental ins., and medical expenses.
Those would cost you way more than $276.00
Biddy...don't hit me..but your mom is right...you would be screwed..way more than return. Even if it was $500..she's still right.

Like the others have said, you have saved more money than you've lost this way. Adding the :) :) ::) to all of the messages probably didn't help in the delivery of that information. (hugs)

anyway, EXACT same thing happened to me this year too! i always got the exact amount of "federal income tax withheld" but since this year i actually worked all year im getting like $150 less than if my mom didnt claim me.
but i love her for paying my car, car insurance, medical/dental insurance, phone...yeah i think thats it. so you shouldnt be super upset your momma still claims you. in the end you come out way ahead!!!
