brain fart

so, do y'all remember, like twelve years ago when i told you to ask me questions, anything at all? and then i promised to answer them? and i never did?

well, actually, i did. i copied all the questions into Word and answered them. and then my retardedness kicked in i completely forgot about it. well, when my computer tried to die, i eneded up buying an external hard drive (on clearance at best buy, sweet!) and backing everything up. guess what i found? yep, all your questions and their answers. so, here goes:

Your favorite meal?
My favorite meal. Oh gosh, that’s tough! I’m in love with food, so it’s hard for me to say just ONE favorite meal. Probably…fried chicken (I love love love almost anything chicken), steamed broccoli, black eyed peas, some really yummy bread or biscuits, and warm peach cobbler with a dollop of homemade vanilla bluebelle on top

Your middle name?
My middle name is Lachelle. It’s pronounced ‘luh-shell’ and is the only “blackness” in my name. It comes from my mother’s best childhood friend, Charlotte. Her middle name is also Lachelle, but I’m wanting to say she spells hers differently…

Your favorite vacation location?
Oh man, I love to travel so this is another hard one for me. Let’s see….Of the places I’ve been, it would be a toss up between Italy and Africa. I LOVE the laid back, romantic atmosphere of Florence. I actually considered going to grad school there. We’ll see if that actually happens. Then there is the Masai Mara in Kenya. Oh man. HEAVEN on earth. I kid you not, it is fantastic! You eat great food, you sleep in the most amazing beds in the most amazing tents (yes, tents…I’ll explain later) and then you go on a wild game ride to see all kinds of wonderful animals up close and personal. It pretty much rocks my world.

Your favorite TV show of the last five years?
I’m glad you said “of the last 5 years”! Though it hasn’t been on for 5 years yet, I would have to say Grey’s Anatomy. I’m hooked. I’m more than hooked. Yes, I own it on DVD. Yes, I’m dying for a new show. Yes, I cried when Denny died. And yes, I say “seriously” all the time. Seriously…

Tell us about what it was like growing up black/white...was it a non-issue? did the other kids give you issues? do you feel like you are more of a white person or black person?
I have to say that growing up mixed (yes, I call it mixed) really was not difficult on me, much. Yeah, every once in a while someone would say something about me being a “half-breed” or whatever. I think because I have always had a sense of humor, I assumed those comments were made to be funny and not hurtful. Looking back, I know they were indeed meant to hurt, but perhaps because I had such a good attitude about it, the comments were few and far between. I was born in 1984. My middle sister (who is also half black/half white) was born in 1978. I have to think that she probably had a much more difficult time growing up mixed than I did. My Papa was worried about having a bi-racial grandchild because of the ridicule and comments he knew she would experience. I think after having her around for 6 years, maybe they had figured out how to handle it or shield it by the time I came along. I am definitely more of a white person than black, and all my friends will tell you that. My mom is white, my dad is black. Growing up in the same town as practically ALL of my mom’s family and NONE of my dad’s family, it was inevitable that I act/feel more “white.” Now, don’t get me wrong, when I get pissed, my black half comes out in a hurry! We see my dad’s family. They live in East Texas and his dad lives in Chicago, so we don’t see them that often. I really hate that. It’s funny though, when we go to his family reunions, I don’t feel out of place at all. Nor does my mom haha. In fact, I sometimes think my mom acts more “black” than my dad – seriously! She was always insistent that I have black baby dolls and black barbies. Perhaps that’s how I ended up with Steve Urkel and M.C. Hammer dolls…

I am definitely one to joke a lot about my race. I’m sure a lot of people hate it, but I honestly think it’s funny. Like when my mom (or anyone really) leaves me out of something I’m always like “oh I see how it is. It’s cause I’m black” or things like that. One day, my dad and I were having an argument over a rug. This rug was golden colored with black animal stripes. He called it zebra, I told him “no dad that’s tiger” and he said “no, brandy that’s zebra!” so I looked at him in all seriousness and said “dad, that is TIGER print. I’ve been to the homeland and saw Zebra’s first hand. They are BLACK and WHITE. Like me!” hehe you should have seen the look on his face. Priceless! Many people have often asked if I gravitate more towards black or white men. Well, I tend to gravitate more towards white people in general. There have been a few black men I have been attracted to, but only went on one date with one black guy. My mom has been on one date with one white guy. Most all of my friends are white as well, and pretty much always have been. If there were more black folk out there that acted like my Daddy instead of wannabe thugs, I would probably date and have more black friends. I don’t like the whole “gangsta” attitude. It drives me insane. I rarely listen to rap – I prefer country music. Is it any wonder someone once told me “brandy, you’re the whitest black person I know”?

Do you smoke after sex?
Aaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahaha talk about a switch! *snort* Well,
Queen, I have never smoked in my entire life. Never once have I lit up, never once have I tried to smoke. Although, I have been told I look damn good holding a cigarette (party days, someone has to pee, says hold my cig…you know how it works). And while I have never smoked and never ever will, I’ll probably be the one to die from lung cancer because of being around so many people that smoke/smoked.

What's your all-time favorite song?
Oh gosh. This is an incredibly difficult question for me to answer. I LOVE music. Music is my life. To pick one song as my all time favorite is a very difficult task. I guess it would have to be a toss up between “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” and “Canon in D” I know, totally not what y’all expected. Canon in D never fails to make me smile and mellow out. It is a classic. It is beautiful. The Lord Bless You and Keep You is the song we sang after every concert in concert choir. It is very near and dear to my heart. I cry every time I hear or sing it…

Big city or small town?
Hmmm well, I live in a fairly small town. It’s not so small that everyone knows everyone else’s business, but it’s not so big that you feel like an ant in an ant farm. I like to visit big cities, but I love living in a smallish town

Cats or dogs?
Ah! An easy one! DOGS! I hate cats. I truly hate them. I know, lots of my friends have cats and they LOVE their cats. And that’s cool. But, I’m allergic to cats. I hate that cats poop in boxes that humans have to clean. I hate that cats bathe themselves then hock up hairballs. I hate that cats don’t walk on leashes or play fetch. I hate that they shed like a sonofabitch. But, should I ever have enough money to have land and horses, I will have a barn cat. Barn cats are totally different

Are you left handed?
Oddly, I’ve always wished I was left handed. Left handed people just seem so much more creative and talented (to me). I am very much right handed though…

What year did you graduate from high school?
2002 and it really does seem like that was a long time ago

What's your favorite childhood memory?
Oh wow. I’ve got some awesome childhood memories. I would have to say that my favorite memory would be the memories of trips taken with Mimi & Papa. We traveled A LOT when I was a kid with the
Cushman club. It was so much fun. I seriously miss all the time we spent together…

Do you have a favorite pair of shoes?
I do. My black roach killers. Unfortunately my retarded dog ate them. Destroyed them. And I’ve never been able to find a pair quite like them. I still have my pink pair, but they don’t go with as much as my black ones did. I know, they just look like pointy toed shoes, but there is just something special about those. The point was just right. The point didn’t point up like a lot of them do (making them look like elf shoes). They had the perfect kitten heel and they were actually comfortable. Sniff sniff…I miss those shoes. My next favorite pair would be my ribbon flats.

so, there ya have it folks. so, it's a few years late, but at least i got around to it. and since i vaguely remember enjoying it so much, ask me some more questions and i promise to answer them before august 1. maybe.

YEAH...
Great post!
2002?? Baby.
What the hell are roach killers?

Jason, as himself said...

Thank you for addressing the "mixed" question. It seems like such a NON-issue to me, but I know that it is not a non-issue to some. You handle it beautifully.

I love all your answers! I have three mixed grandchildren in two families so your feelings about being mixed really resonate. My one granddaughter doesn't have any contact with her dad's family (her black half), but has more black friends than white. Her mom and her adoptive dad live in a military town with a population that has a high percentage of blacks. I know this might sound weird to you but I don't see many of the kids acting black in the stereo-typical way that most think about except for the one time I went to a church that I'll call a "black church" because it was a riot! I had a good time, but I must say, it was a far cry from any mass I've attended in my life, and the Catholic church I attend had a high percentage of blacks.

One funny incident when my granddaughter was five...we were driving back to our hotel in France. We had just left Disney Paris, and my granddaughter was brushing the hair on her new Cinderella doll that I bought her. I reached over and hugged her saying, "she's beautiful just like you". My granddaughter looked at me, laughed and said, "Grandma, I'm not a white girl!" She's 14 now and we still laugh about that!

Love your blog even if I don't always leave a comment :)
